Abstract:
Modern hearing aids are small computers. They not only make sounds louder but also are implemented with many digital signal processing algorithms to enhance speech understanding, improve sound quality, and i ncrease user convenience. Directional microphones, for example, use spatial differences between speech and noise to reduce the interference of background noise. Newer directional microphone can transmit signals from one hearing aid to the other hearing aid to generate more directional responses and to provide more directional ben efits. Instead of using the traditional FM or infrared systems, hearing loop systems and Bluetooth devices are used to further enhance signal to noise ratio and improve speech understanding. Noise reduction algorithms, on the other hand, take advantage of the differences between speech and noise characteristics to reduce long duration background noise, transient noise, and wind noise.
In addition, modern hearing aids are often implemented with algorithms to promote communication and monitor health condition s. This alk will discuss the design rational of these algorithms and how they can be used effectively to help people with hearing loss.
Dr King Chung is an educator, a researcher, and a humanitarian. Her areas of expertise include acoustics, amplification, calibration, and humanitarian audiology. Her research focuses on how to improve signal processing strategies of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Dr. Chung and her research team also developed an automated hearing test app to improve the access to hearing loss identification, especially in low- to mid-income countries. A Fulbright Scholar and a Humanitarian Award recipient, she led students onto >10 humanitarian research and service trips to 4 continents to foster future generations of humanitarians and to facilitate better hearing care services around the world.

Abstract:
In Fall 2022, Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction, marks its 25th year. Since its founding, the genre that Brevity champions, and which is often called flash nonfiction, has surged in popularity with American readers and writers. Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights (Algonquin Books, 2019), for example, became a New York Times bestseller. Countless journals now publish flash nonfiction and encourage its creation through contests. Moreover, the genre has mutated through experimentation, leading to collage essays, micro memoirs, and more. Poets and prose writers alike turn to flash nonfiction because it rewards the gifts of each. In this talk, I will point to journals, anthologies, and publications that illustrate the popularity of the genre–often defined as nonfiction delivered in fewer than 750 words. Then, drawing from my own flash nonfiction publications and experimentation with the form, along with examples from other writers, I will argue that flash nonfiction’s relevance and popularity stem from its reflection of a hyper-fragmented America, its suitability to internet publication, its malleability as a form, and its power–though bite-sized–to satisfy a reader’s hunger for literature.
Michael Downs is the author of three books, including most recently a novel, The Strange and True Tale of Horace Wells, Surgeon Dentist (Acre Books 2018). His literary fiction and nonfiction have been published in leading American literary journals, and he has regularly presented his work individually or at conferences. His flash nonfiction has appeared in half a dozen journals, earning recognition as “notable” in the Best American Essays series. On sabbatical in 2021-22 from his work directing the graduate program in professional writing at Towson University, Maryland, USA, he has most recently worked as a Fulbright Scholar in Kraków, hosted by Jagiellonian University. Wykład jest próbą zrelacjonowania polsko-japońskich relacji w teatrze i dramacie na przestrzeni ponad stu lat ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem własnych doświadczeń w dialogu z japońską klasyką – pisaniem i wystawianiem Stroiciela fortepianu, dramatu nowego no z Chopinem i Delacroix w rolach głównych.
Dr Jadwiga Rodowicz jest wybitnym ekspertem kultury japońskiej, a przede wszystkim teatru japońskiego. Jest aktorką, reżyserką, dramatopisarką. Jest też autorką licznych opracowań z dziedziny historii teatru nō, a także artykułów poświęconych kulturze i estetyce Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni. W latach 1979-1989 była członkinią zespołu teatru „Gardzienice”. Od 2008 do 2012 r. pełniła funkcję Ambasadora RP w Tokio. Była autorką pierwszej, zrealizowanej według klasycznych reguł japońskiego teatru nō, sztuki „Stroiciel fortepianu” (Chōritsushi), wystawionej w 2011 w Polsce i w Japonii. Jej debiutem reżyserskim było „Umiłowanie” według opowiadania Yukio Mishimy zrealizowanej w Teatrze Pieśń Kozła w 2015 r. W 2018 i 2019 r. zrealizowała i wystawiła w Polsce i w Japonii „Dziady polsko-japońskie / Soreisai”
